 Ways to Say “I don’t know”

I’d like to focus on the different ways you can say “Idon’t know” in English.

In life we are at some stage going to have to use this expression, so as variety is the spice of life, using different ways to say “I don’t know” would make your conversation far more interesting and natural.

1. Dunno

This word is used informally and in spoken language, especially by teenagers who don’t want to answer their parents!

‘When do you have to submit this essay?’ ‘Dunno. I can’t remember.’

2. I have no idea/I haven’t a clue/I haven’t the faintest idea

These expressions are used when you have no information and you cannot guess the answer to a question

·         ‘What time does the film start?’ ‘I have no idea. Why don’t you call the cinema?’

·         ‘Would you by any chance know where St James’s Street is?’ ‘I haven’t a clue.Sorry.’

·         ‘Could somebody please explain how this happened?’ ‘I haven’t the faintest idea.’

3. How should I know?/Don’t ask me/Search me

These expressions are used when you do not know something and you feel annoyed that someone is asking you about it.

·         ‘Who left this mess on the table?’ ‘How should I know? I’ve only just come home.’

·         ‘What time did she say she was catching her train? ’ ‘Don’t ask me. I’m always the last to know.’

·         ‘Why didn’t he ask you for the keys?’ ‘Search me. I’m not a mind reader.’

4. Who knows?/It’s anyone’s guess

These are used for saying that you don’t know something because it is impossible for anyone to know it:

·         ‘Will they ever find the missing aircraft?’ ‘Who knows? The search been going on for such a long time now.’

·         ‘How the situation will develop from here is anyone’s guess.’

5. Your guess is as good as mine

This is used for saying that you know as little about something as the person who asked you about it

·         ‘Do you think we will be able to book the restaurant for Friday?’ ‘Your guess is as good as mine.’

6. Not as far as I know

·         We use this to say that something may be true, but you do not have enough information to know whether it is or not

·         ‘Has Clive left the company? I haven’t seen him for ages.’ ‘Not as far as I know, but I haven’t seen him recently either.’

7. It beats me

This is a rather informal expression to say that you do not know or understand something. “It” is often left out.

·         ‘Why did he do such a stupid thing?’ ‘It beats me’

It means: dont think too much. Sử dụng nó khi muốn động viên ai, khi ai đó đang lo lắng quá nhiều hoặc đang chần chừ do dự chưa quyết định điều gì

3. I'm getting older 

It means day by day you turn older. Tôi đang già đi, tôi già rồi.

Biến thể câu thành nhiều câu: she/ he/ they/ my mother/ my father.... is/are getting older

4. Your life is getting hard

It means the person will have if live like that

Biến thể thành nhiều câu: My life/ his life/ her life/ ...  is getting hard

5. Keep up with S.O

It means you are following

6. He wanna know about my family business

My family business đừng lầm tưởng nó là chuyện kinh doanh của gia đình nhé nghĩ như vậy là sai hoàn toàn đấy.  ở đây có nghĩa là chuyện gia đinh, những chuyện riêng tư của gia đình mà bạn chỉ muốn những người quen thân biết ví dụ đại loại như: ba tôi có bồ nhí, bố mẹ tôi hay cãi nhau, hoặc nhà tôi đang phá sản, ....

Câu này có thể là một lời phàn nàn nếu bạn và người đó chưa thân nhau mà bạn/ người đó hỏi về family business. Chỉ sử dụng khi đã thân thiết nhé.

7. That sounds nice

Nghe được đó, nghe hay đó, ôh hay đó.... Đây là lời tán thưởng cho ý tưởng của ai đó, hoặc tán thưởng điều ai đó đang nói.

8.  I do the same thing everyday

Nghĩa là bạn đang phàn nàn về cuộc sống nhàm chán. Bạn muốn nói ngày nào của tôi cũng vậy hoặc Công việc của tôi chán quá bạn đều sử dụng I do the same thing everyday ngắn gọn mà nghe rất hay ( hay theo văn hóa , suy nghĩ của người Mỹ )

9. I'm addicted to + N

Nghĩa là bạn ghiền, bạn nghiện, bạn không thể từ bỏ nó
Biến thể câu thành nhiều câu:
He/ She/ My brother..... is addicted to Jiyeon - Tara
He/ She/ My brother..... is addicted to this song / this strory/ this novel/ this dramma/ learn English.......

10. I'm well-paid

Nghĩa là lương của bạn cũng khá tốt, lương của bạn trả rất xứng đáng, hoặc lượng của bạn cao ( không quá cao , lương cao bất thường thì không dùng câu này nhé )
Biến thể:
I wanna looking for a job that im well-paid.
I'm happy with my job cos I am well-paid
I am not well-paid so I wanna looking for new ones
...........

11. I'm in good/ bad mood

Ý nói tâm trạng của bạn hôm nay thế nào tốt hay buồn...

12. No more no less

Nghĩa là vừa đủ, không ít cũng không nhiều, cũng được
Sử dụng trong một số tình huống như: Uh lương của tôi cũng no more no less, tôi thích cái này nhưng cũng no more no less,.....

Chuyện sao rồi, Sao rồi mày?

14. I'm back from school 

Tôi vừa đi học về. Hãy dùng nó thay vì nói dài dòng là: I come out of school and just come home...

Bạn biến thể:
Im back from vung tau province at 2pm. Bạn mới đi  ( chơi ) ở vũng tàu về hồi 2 giờ chiều.
